the corrosive fog, the jabberjays and the monkey muttations
It doesn’t matter if you’re pretty
or have things all over your face,
because what truly matters is
what’s inside you.
this is actually the most meaningful and thoughtful post i have ever seen on tumblr
In my abnormal psychology class today, we began our unit on stress-trauma disorders. Our lecturer warned us in advance that we’d be addressing some triggering trauma such as suicide, homicide, accidents, war, sexual assault and rape. It was put out there that anyone feeling uncomfortable with the topics “could by all means exit the classroom and read the chapter instead.” Near the end of the lecture we entered the psychological distress and dysfunction rape survivors experience, and in the back corner of the room I saw a girl quietly struggle with her tears, her whole body trembling in silence. After the lecture ended, I walked up to her and asked her if she was okay. We spent fifteen minutes just talking in an empty classroom; I learned that she was a rape survivor and was suffering PTSD from it. She didn’t leave class though because she thought people wouldn’t believe her and think she was being dramatic. I told her I believed her and it wasn’t her fault. And she cried even more because neither her friends or her family “had ever said that to her.” And that’s fucked up. That is so fucked up that a poor girl could be violated and invaded, and the people she loved most couldn’t even believe her. Fuck all these ‘ism’s that claim to raise awareness and defend the oppressed. Toss away the stupid labels and stand up, stand up together. Equality for this group or that group shouldn’t be what we prioritize, equality for humanity is what we should prioritize.
